2011 NFL Survivor Pool Picks - Week 14

Dec 08, 2011

Of the 22% of members eliminated in Week 13, 18% of them had Chicago. Of course, that was my defacto selection last week also, so apologies to the readers out there. I really think the loss of Matt Forte early in the game doomed the Bears. Hanie did not show any of the flashes he did last season and a low scoring game, as predicted, isn't where any of us want to be invested.

It's tough recommending teams this time of year since everyone's options are so different. However, despite my earlier elimination(s) this season, I'll stick it out to the end of the year and continue to look at the top teams being picked on our site.

Attractive Picks for Week 14

New York Jets (vs. Kansas City) - It's a strange season when the Chiefs are a better road team than home team. They upset the Bears last week in Chicago, but I think it will be a tough order to pull off another road upset in New York this week. The Jets have won two straight and are defiitely playing better. Every remaining game is critical for the Jets and I think their 7th ranked defense will be too much for Kansas City.

Baltimore (vs. Indianapolis) - Did you watch the Colts play tough for the first 20+ minutes against the Patriots? Did you watch them play NO defense after that? Then did you watch their attempt at a comeback to only lose by seven points? If we're keeping it real, that was more about the Patriots packing it in than the Colts suddenly playing well ... and Belichick ripped them for it. The Ravens are still undefeated at home and that shouldn't change this week.

Pittsburgh (vs. Cleveland) - The Browns just are not a good team. Their offense is arguably the worst in the league. However, did you know they give up the fewest passing yards in the league? I didn't either, but I think that may be that they are often losing by so much that teams just pound the ball against them. They are ranked second to last against the run. This is one of the few divison rivalries that always seems to go to one team ... the Steelers. I don't see that changing this week.

Picks to Avoid in Week 14

Seattle (vs. St. Louis) - I actually liked Seattle in this game. They are tough at home and the Rams have the lowest scoring team in the league, getting shut out last week. However, I'm steering clear of this game because it is on Monday night. I always get burned on Monday night. If you don't worry about the game being in primetime and are scrambling to find a team, Seattle might not be a bad choice at all.

Detroit (vs. Minnesota) - This one seems like a big mismatch in the Lions favor, especially with all the injury concerns for the Vikings. However, this division rivalry is always screwy and the Lions have been giving up a ton of points as of late. If you haven't used the Lions yet, you may not have a great chance to (unless you want to take them against the Raiders in Oakland). However, the NFC North divisional games are a risky proposition.

San Diego (vs. Buffalo) - The Bills have lost 5 straight and are basically embarassing themselves at this point. San Diego looked good against a bad Jaguars team last week and should be able to handle the Bills, as well. But these are the Chargers we're talking about and they never cease to amaze with their inconsisten play. Call this one more of a gut feeling than anything else.

My Week 14 Pick

It would be nice to have a team like the Ravens or Steelers left at this point in the season, but most don't, including myself. If Seattle was playing at 4:15 on Sunday, I might have gone with them this week against an anemic Rams offense. But primetime brings out the best (and worst) in certain teams and players and that makes me nervous. The Jets are playing well, getting healthy, and have a swarming defense that should cause problems for the Kansas City offense. Nothing is certain this time of year, but I'm going with the J-E-T-S for Week 14.

So I have both the Jets (-9) and the Ravens (-16) left, but would love to save the Ravens for Week 16, cause I just don't see any viable options for that week. (already burned all other top ten teams except the saints.)
Is it too late in the season to save teams?
(three teams left in my pool.)

I can pick Balt this week and they are 10-15 to 1 favorites but somehow I think Denver and Seattle
are better picks simply because of momentum
and the way the teams are playing. You could throw
in Miami as well. It's as if I wish I did not have Balt available I would be happier with Seattle just shows what happens when your football
team (baltimore) lacks charactor and a quality QB
You cannot trust Baltimore and Indy played with a spark and actually thinks it can win
I have to take Baltimore but why am I not feeling
better about it

@Jeff Reid - Lots of factors involved in that question. I would certainly look at who the other surviving members have already taken. I don't think it is necessarily too late to "save" a team. The bottom line is you need your team to survive this week, so if the Jets aren't making you happy, go with the option that does. Always trust your gut.

Jeff - I'm in the same boat with Jets and Ravens alive. I am saving the Ravens for week 16. I think there is a strong possibility my pool goes the distance with 6 teams (out of 295) left right now and I also see no other viable week 16 options. I'm taking Seattle this week, Titans or Bengals next week, then Baltimore week 16. Wish me luck!

Seattle or San Diego this week, which one would you choose? Would like many opinions, I am leaning toward SD finally being healthy.
