Football pools are a very popular form of gaming and betting for many people. It is generally well-liked because it involves wagering money between friends and other competitors, rather than blindly against a sportsbook or bookie.

Many football fans will set up various types of pools, including a very popular pool with the Super Bowl. RYP has various types of football pools to offer, which will be covered. Not a football fan? No problem! RYP also has tons of other pools to choose from for other sports such as the NBA, March Madness and the Masters!

    What Are Football Pools?

Football pools are contests involving friends, family members or random peers. There are various types of pools, but it typically involves selecting winners or answers to win a prize. Football pools can range from anything such as Squares to Prop Parties.

The main attraction to football pools is the community engagement between a group of peers. Whether it be friends, family members or co-workers, most pools allow for competitive balance amongst a group of people regardless of topic knowledge.

    How To Play Football Pools

This can vary based on the type of pool you are playing. There are various types of football pools such as Survivor Pools or Pick’ems.

    Survivor Pools

The Survivor Pool is one of the most common and popular football pools around. In fact, Las Vegas offers a huge city contest for anyone to play in. With Survivor Pools, a person picks one team to win a game each week. If the person’s team wins, then they advance to the next week. If the person’s team loses, then they are eliminated from the pool.

Pool commissioners can elect for picks to be either straight up or with a point spread. Most Survivor Pools are straight up picks, as it is difficult enough to pick winners without worrying about a spread.

    Squares Pools

Squares Pools are a very popular form of football pools to play during the Super Bowl, also known as ‘Super Bowl Squares’. This pool requires a 10×10 grid with one team representing the X-axis with numbers listed zero through nine, while the other team represents the Y-axis with numbers listed zero through nine.

Members select a square in which they think the final digit of each team’s score will intersect at the end of each quarter. There are four opportunities to win squares, each coming at the end of each quarter. Some pool commissioners will assign boxes randomly, while others will let you pick.

    Prop Pools

Much like the squares, the Prop Pools are very popular during the Super Bowl. In prop pools, members simply select the correct answers to different prop questions. The questions can range from game outcomes to entertainment surrounding the event. A prop question could be ‘Will a Tight End score a TD in the game?’ or ‘Will the Halftime Show feature over 4.5 songs?’

    Pick’em Pools

Pick’em pools are very popular during the regular-season, as it is simply seeing who can correctly pick the most game outcomes. With a pick’em pool, members only pick the winners of each game every week. The member with the most correct picks at the end of the season wins. This format is very popular because of its simplicity to run and play in.

    Confidence Pools

This style of pool is very popular during the College Football Bowl Season, in which members of the pool pick game outcomes. Pool commissioners can determine if members must pick the outcomes of the point spread or simply pick outright winners.

The scoring is different with a confidence pool, as members must attach a ‘confidence number’ to each pick. What is a confidence number?

If you are picking the outcome of 16 football games during a week, a confidence pool member will have to attach a number one through 16 to each game – selecting each number only once. If a pool member is very confident in a pick then they can attach the number 16 to it and if they win, they get 16 points.

    33 Pools

33 Pools are a unique pool game in which each member gets a team randomly assigned to them. If their team scores 33 points in a game, they get a point. Whichever member has the most points at the end of the season wins. This is a great format to use if wanting to play a season-long pool game but without having to make different picks each week.

Tips And Recommendations When Playing Football Pools

This mainly depends on what type of football pool you are playing in. For Squares Pools as example, knowing touchdowns are typically seven points with the added PAT it would be wise to search for box numbers divisible by seven.

If in a Confidence Pool, it would make sense to only use your high confidence numbers on games you are certain in rather than your low numbers. Whatever pool you are playing in, it’s wise to do research ahead of time. The most important tip though is to have fun!
