It was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association in Canton, Ohio before changing its name to the National Football League in 1922. The NFL’s first president was Jim Thorpe, an accomplished athlete who had won gold medals in the 1912 Olympic Games.

The league began with five teams from Ohio — the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Columbus Panthers, and Dayton Triangles — along with four teams from Illinois — the Decatur Staleys, Racine Cardinals, Chicago Tigers, and Rock Island Independents) two — teams from New York — the Buffalo All-Americans and the Rochester Jeffersons — two teams from Indiana — the Hammond Pros and the Muncie Flyers — and one team from Michigan — the Detroit Heralds. Though these 14 teams were the foundation of the NFL as we know it today, only two teams remain: the Cardinals (who moved to St. Louis and then finally settled again in Arizona) and the Decatur Staleys who moved to Chicago and renamed themselves the Bears.

The Canton Bulldogs were one of the most dominant NFL teams in the early 1900s. They boasted famous players such as Olympic Gold Medalist and hailed football hero, Jim Thorpe. The Bulldogs won back-to-back NFL championship game titles in 1922 and 1923. To this day, the Canton Bulldogs still hold the NFL record for most consecutive team wins, with 25 straight. The team’s success was due in part to their strong defense, which was anchored by Thorpe himself. In addition, the team had a number of talented offensive players, including future Hall of Famer Red Grange.

Though the league initially consisted of just 14 teams, it soon expanded. Today, the NFL is made up of 32 teams spread across the United States.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans (13) catches a 13-yard toucheown reception during the first half of an NFL football game against the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, in Tampa, Fla. Composed of 32 teams from across the country, the NFL is divided into two conferences: the American Football Conference, or AFC, and the National Football Conference, or NFC. Each conference is then further divided into four divisions: East, West, North, and South.

NFL football is a complex game with many rules. The team that scores the most points in a game is declared the winner.

The NFL season begins with training camp in late July. During training camp, teams practice and scrimmage against each other to get ready for the regular season. The pre-season starts in August and consists of four exhibition games. These games do not count towards a team’s regular season record.

During the regular season, each team plays 17 games, both at home and away. They are divided into two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC), and each conference is further divided into four divisions. The top team in each division automatically qualifies for the playoffs, as do two wild card teams from each conference (the teams with the next best record).

The teams that win their divisional championship games then advance to the conference championship games, with the winners of those games going on to compete in the Super Bowl.
