A small-conference champion that most people couldn\u2019t place on a map shocking the world, upending outfits with mountains of resources in comparison, is the primary cause for March Madness\u2019s celebration. The best part is \u2013 the question isn\u2019t if it will happen, but whom? Enter our Cinderella candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watch a lot of college basketball, but I\u2019m no savant. I can\u2019t tell you with certainty who will slide into that slipper. But what I can do is give you a list of some of the most likely culprits and leave the rest to you and your beautiful, bracket-filling mind. These are a handful of the double-digit seeds that you should keep an eye on for second-weekend runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Watch Out for These Cinderella Candidates<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13 Iona<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Round Matchup: 4 UConn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First and foremost, Iona has Rick Pitino. Putting aside any opinions on him as a person, he\u2019s proven himself to be quite the basketball coach over the decades. He is not the ideal man to patrol the opposing sideline when you\u2019re in the NCAA Tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">????? ??? ????? ???? ?? ??? ????? ?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GaelNation?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GaelNation<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarchMadnessMBB?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MarchMadnessMBB<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/e6u53j9sXO\">pic.twitter.com\/e6u53j9sXO<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Iona Men\u2019s Basketball (@IonaGaelsMBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IonaGaelsMBB\/status\/1634763406426112000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond Iona\u2019s elite coaching, this team has a menacing backcourt of Walter Clayton Jr. and Daniss Jenkins. Both are excellent scorers, with Clayton especially dangerous from deep, and are tough to handle on the defensive end, too. The Gaels like to play pressure defense, and these two are at the forefront of that attack. Iona has the best assist\/turnover ratio<a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/conferences\/statistics\/team\/_\/id\/13\/stat\/assists\/sort\/assistTurnoverRatio\"> in the MAAC<\/a>, and it spreads the ball around outstandingly. Cinderellas are often energized by heroic backcourts, and Iona has that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, Nelly Junior Joseph is a machine on the glass and in the paint. He\u2019s nearly averaging a double-double (15.1 points, 9.4 rebounds per game) and offers Iona a punishing option down low. This team\u2019s backcourt is very strong, and Joseph provides the foil so opponents can\u2019t just load up on the perimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13 Kent State<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Round Matchup: 4 Indiana<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of special guards who could fuel a run, enter Sincere Carry. The fifth-year senior started his career at Duquesne but has spent the last two years at Kent State, and his scoring has blown up with the Golden Flashes. His 17.6 points per game average this season is fourth in the MAC, and he can really fill it up. Carry gave Toledo fits in the MAC Final to the tune of 26 points, effectively getting to the hole at will and connecting from deep. If he\u2019s putting the ball in the bucket with confidence, his opposition should be concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qQZPb_CIR9A\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kent State also thrives at protecting the rim and forcing its opponents into bad situations. The Golden Flashes are top 20 in Division I in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/basketball-men\/d1\/current\/team\/931\"> turnovers forced per game<\/a> (16.13) and are atop the MAC in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/conferences\/statistics\/team\/_\/id\/14\/stat\/blocks\"> blocks per contest<\/a> (3.94). A big reason for the turnovers is Mallque Jacobs, whose 2.7 steals per outing is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/basketball-men\/d1\/current\/individual\/139\"> second-best in the nation<\/a>. Kent State is in the top 40 of<a href=\"https:\/\/kenpom.com\/index.php?s=RankAdjDE\"> KenPom\u2019s<\/a> adjusted defensive efficiency metric. Indiana must take good care of the ball to advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Flashes also have a chip on their shoulder. It\u2019s a clich\u00e9, but it\u2019s true \u2013 Kent State<a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/2022\/03\/12\/mac-suspends-four-kent-state-mbb-players-for-conference-title-game\"> dealt with some drama<\/a> in its quest for a tournament bid last season, and it used that disappointment as a rallying cry to make amends in 2023. How often do we see turnarounds like this in this sport? You\u2019ve got a very hungry group here eager to finally have its shot in the Big Dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12 Charleston<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Round Matchup: 5 San Diego State<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are only four teams in the country with at least 30 wins heading into the NCAA Tournament, and Charleston is one of them. Pat Kelsey\u2019s Cougars are in the midst of the program\u2019s best-ever season and will be a trendy pick to make a run this March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WELCOME TO THE DANCE, CHARLESTON ?<br><br>With its most wins in program history, the Cougars win the CAA Championship and are headed to the NCAA Tournament! ? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MarchMadness?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MarchMadness<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7jOA5h7OBK\">pic.twitter.com\/7jOA5h7OBK<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarchMadnessMBB\/status\/1633290557270155269?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charleston is one of the best rebounding teams in the country. It\u2019s fourth in Division I in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/basketball-men\/d1\/current\/team\/932\"> rebounds per game<\/a> (40.5) and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/basketball-men\/d1\/current\/team\/857\"> offensive rebounds per game<\/a> (13.65), and it\u2019s a full team effort on the glass. Every single member of the rotation chips in at least 2.0 boards per contest \u2013 opponents can\u2019t center their focus on one rebounder and expect to get away with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ante Brzovic is the team\u2019s leading rebounder and a serious load inside. He\u2019s excellent defensively, and he\u2019s crucial to everything Charleston tries to do offensively. He averaged 16.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the CAA Tournament \u2013 if he can continue that sort of display, then the Cougars are very dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12 Oral Roberts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Round Matchup: 5 Duke<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oral Roberts is another one of those four 30-win squads, and it has a name that you\u2019re likely to recognize \u2013 Max Abmas is still a Golden Eagle, and he\u2019s still very, very good at basketball.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesummitleague.org\/news\/2023\/3\/2\/awards-orus-abmas-nets-second-summitmbb-player-of-the-year-award.aspx\"> For the second time<\/a>, the guard was named Summit League Player of the Year, and it wasn\u2019t really a question. His 22.2 points per game is sixth-best in the country, and Abmas is ridiculously efficient considering his usage. We\u2019ve already seen him do amazing things in this tournament before. I would not want to be an opponent tasked with dealing with him in a single-elimination format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tSmPCRoNbpY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is otherwise an excellent shooting team that puts a premium on getting up tons of shots. Its 47.9-percent mark from the field and 36.9-percent clip from beyond the arc help contribute to putting up 84.2 points per contest,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncaa.com\/stats\/basketball-men\/d1\/current\/team\/145\"> the third-best rate in Division I<\/a>. The Golden Eagles also crash the boards hard, getting second-chance opportunities on the offensive end and enforcing one-and-done possessions on the defensive side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve seen Oral Roberts go on a Cinderella run not long ago. With Abmas still around and Oral Roberts boasting a potent offense that can bury unprepared opposition, it\u2019s perfectly plausible that we see it again in 2023. A red-hot Duke stands in the way, but we have seen crazier things than a surprise 12-over-5 upset.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It happens every year, so why not get prepared for the upsets?
