The Draft is Coming.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just two weeks away from the 2023 NFL Draft<\/a>, one of the more underlooked positions that can truly be feast or famine is running back. Drafting running backs is no bargain in the modern era, and while this class has some flash it\u2019s not as deep as we\u2019ve seen in recent years. For one, the duration of a running back\u2019s career is plummeting, and the versatility and \u201cplug and play\u201d nature of a lot of the higher-paced offenses in the league has made your traditional three-down back a thing of the past. Furthermore, college programs and offenses are leaning into that versatility in scheming, so the value isn’t quite what it used to be. Running backs are not feeling the inflation like we all are these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s NFL Draft board is led by an interesting mix of backs that are certainly versatile in the name of today\u2019s game. Most have that big game and big school experience that GMs love to see, but there are also some backs down the list that could be game-breakers even faster than a day 1 or 2 pick. Here\u2019s what you need to know on the best backs available for your team to pounce come draft night:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Top Crop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Bijan Robinson – <\/strong>What is there to say about the top back on the board? I\u2019ve had the privilege of watching Bijan\u2019s career here in Austin, Texas with the Texas Longhorns and it\u2019s been an exponential rise to national attention. He\u2019s a stop-and-start back that breaks ankles on defense and gives off plenty of Reggie Bush vibes\u2026with the power of Derrick Henry when he gets going. He broke all sorts of broken tackle records last season and should be a quick starter for any NFL roster in year one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Pick Projection: Round 1 – Pick #26 (Dallas Cowboys)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Jahmyr Gibbs – <\/strong>The Alabama back took in all there was to learn in a Nick Saban system and reaped the benefit on the ground and through the air. Though Robinson is the more versatile back I would contend Gibbs is a lot more \u201cscreen-ready\u201d in the NFL to catch and run with regularity, and can also pose as a downfield threat in today’s modernized league. It\u2019s always a decently safe play to draft a dude from Bama to be your horse for a few seasons.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Pick Projection: Round 2 – Pick #45 (Green Bay Packers)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Zach Charbonnet – <\/strong>A name that many college football fans will recognize, it\u2019s a hard name to forget and his highlight-filled time at UCLA was a treat to watch and to bet on. Playing alongside DTR in the Bruins’ offense allowed Charbonnet to be creative in playmaking and show off his downfield speed. The PAC-12 Chip Kelly offense did wonders for his endurance, and there\u2019s a chance he\u2019ll be a team\u2019s regular back in short order if the opportunity is there on the depth chart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Pick Projection: Round 2 – Pick #54 (Los Angeles Chargers)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        1. Devon Achane – <\/strong>The Texas A&M back broke all sorts of tackles and his speed allowed him to be the highlight maker in an otherwise highlight-free Aggies campaign in 2022. Thai probably doesn\u2019t help his stock too much. The \u201ctrack guy\u201d stereotype is there (all speed, no power) and a few more pounds of muscle may not be the worst thing for his future in the NFL. He\u2019ll get a chance to shine and put on the burners, but will be durable?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Pick Projection: Round 3 – Pick #73 (Houston Texans)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Sleeper RBs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          Beyond the highly touted RBs that have had illustrious college careers, there\u2019s a slew of talented backs that are being quite overlooked. Let\u2019s give these horses some shine and scope who might find a late-round bargain to diversify their offense in 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Dewayne McBride –<\/strong> You may not have seen much of McBride at UAB, but he\u2019s racked up three straight seasons of impressive numbers at running back. He\u2019s not doing it on college football\u2019s biggest stage but he\u2019s NFL-ready and experienced in handling the workload as an every-down running back. McBrudge projects towards the end of day two in round three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Deuce Vaughn –<\/strong> As we make it into day three of the draft, you start to find the under and oversized talent that doesn\u2019t grade out as it should to NFL Scouts. At just 5 foot 6 the diminutive Vaughn looks and plays like a carbon copy of NFL great Darren Sproles – quick, jittery, and elusive on the field. Naturally, his size will make him a tricky play, but it\u2019s one I\u2019m down to take. Vaughn is projected to be picked in the 4th round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Roschon Johnson –<\/strong> He came into college as a QB and will leave Austin as a running back. He served as Bijan\u2019s counterpart on offense but showed great promise and growth over his four years on campus. Could mold into more of a special teams returner and offsetting RB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Kendre Miller – <\/strong>The TCU back was vital throughout their magical 2022 run to the title game and possesses a mix of skills to get him drafted late on day three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Don\u2019t worry, at least half of these backs will be out of the league in 3-4 seasons if the track record is any indicator. With that being said – happy drafting!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
