Picking NFL winners Against the Spread (ATS) is a great way to dive deeper into the game and explore the trends behind the oddsmakers\u2019 lines. Understanding spreads and how certain teams perform ATS will give you an edge to beat your friends in your survivor pool. In this series, we\u2019ll profile two NFL divisions per week and offer up free tips, or identify survivor traps, in each team\u2019s 2023 schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFC West<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The San Francisco 49ers were the class of this division ATS in 2022 (65% overall) and are likely still your most reliable weekly ATS play. The Cardinals were a decent underdog, while the Seahawks were abysmal as a favorite. The Rams were just unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arizona Cardinals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Arizona was better than you may expect ATS in 2022 (47%) and did just as well at home as they did on the road (50%). They were very weak in their own division (17%) and performed best as an away underdog (57%), pointing to possible opportunities as a survivor play early in the 2023 season vs. NYG in Week 2, and Dallas in Week 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los Angeles Rams<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Rams were poor ATS overall in 2022 (35%). They were net losers at home (45%), on the road (25%), as an underdog (36%), and as a favorite (33%). If you\u2019re looking for a bright spot to play the Rams in your survivor pools, the Rams were best in \u201822 as a home underdog, when they went 3-1 (75%), which will probably be the case Week 2 vs. SFO and Week 5 vs. Philadelphia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Francisco 49ers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The 49ers were good ATS generally (65%), and very strong at home (82%), and as a favorite (71%). They are most vulnerable as an away underdog in non-conference games (20%), setting up their Week 10 visit to Jacksonville scheduled for November 12th as a potential trap game for the 49ers. Stay away from the Niners in your survivor pools in Week 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seattle Seahawks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Seattle was below average ATS overall in 2022 (39%) and performed better as an underdog (50%) then they did as a favorite (17%). A definite home \u2018dog, Seattle was 3-1 (75%) when visitors were favored in 2022. That nicely sets up key home tilts to be used as survivor picks scheduled for Week 12 vs. SFO, and Week 15 vs. Philly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AFC West<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the Underdog Division — the four teams were a combined 17-8 (68%) as \u2018dogs in 2022. The Chargers led the way with a 5-1 record as an underdog, while the Broncos were a surprising 6-3 (67%). On the downside, the collective division managed just 15 home wins in 34 attempts in \u201822 (44%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denver Broncos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There was little to celebrate in the Broncos \u201822 ATS performance. The team came up short overall (41%), as an away team (38%), as a home team (38%), and as a favorite (13%). The Broncos only winning edge ATS came as an underdog (67%), edging a little stronger at home. That sets up Week 1 vs. Las Vegas as a decent opportunity to take the Broncos ATS, either in your pick’em pool or to get them out of the way in your survivor pool. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kansas City Chiefs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Chiefs were champs in 2022, but not so much ATS. A surprising 8-11 overall ATS (42%), KC was actually more vulnerable at home (30%) and as a favorite (35%) then they were as a \u2018dog or away team. KC was weakest ATS in conference games (3-11 or 21%), and weirdly just 1-4 (20%) with a rest advantage. That sets up Week 7 vs. LAC as a potential trap game. Stay away from them in your survivor pool in Week 7!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Las Vegas Raiders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Las Vegas had a pretty average ATS in 2022 (47%), performing best as a home team (63%), and an underdog (57%). They were not good on the road (33%), and covered the spread just 40% of the time as a favorite. The Raiders were least trusty as an away favorite in (0-4), making the 2023 opener against Denver a survivor trap game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Los Angeles Chargers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There was a lot to admire about the Chargers\u2019 2022 performance ATS. The team came out winners overall (61%), away (70%), and brilliant as an underdog (83%). If LAC has a weakness it is as a home favorite (33%), which raises red flags for games scheduled in Week 1 vs. Miami, and Week 8 vs. Chicago. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
