Picking NFL winners Against the Spread (ATS) is a great way to dive deeper into the game and explore the trends behind the oddsmakers\u2019 lines. Understanding spreads and how certain teams perform ATS will give you an edge to beat your friends in your Survivor Pool<\/a>. In this series, we profile two divisions per week and offer up free tips, or identify survivor traps, in each team\u2019s 2023 schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NFC North – Detroit\u2019s Division<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The NFC North was 32-35-2 (47%) overall ATS in 2022. The Lions were by far the most consistent option, ending the season as a net winner in every top-line category. Green Bay was middling but better as an underdog. Chicago was terrible away but good as a \u2018dog. The Vikings were favored far too often, it seems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chicago Bears<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chicago was bad overall ATS (29%) but good as an underdog in 2022 (71%). They were terrible against teams in their division (17%) and only 25% vs. NFC Conference rivals. The Bears were a middling 50% in non-conference games, and an NFC North-worst 17% ATS in division games. They never won two in a row, and they usually lost three in a row. Survivor Tip: Don\u2019t pick the Bears, period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Detroit Lions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Detroit was the second best team in the NFL ATS in 2022 at 12-5 (71%). The Lions were the strongest ATS at home (78%) and as an underdog (73%). Strange But True: Detroit was 7-1 (88%) the week after a win in \u201822 and returns most of their coaches and starters. Survivor Tip: Pick the Lions in your Survivor Pool against division rivals (they were 6-0 last year).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green Bay Packers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Packers were as good as Aaron Rodgers in 2022 and he\u2019s not around anymore. Take every ATS trend for the Packers and toss it out. Jordan Love is a different guy and the Packers have the cheapest wide receiver room in town. The Pack rolls with defense and running game this season. Survivor Tip: Look for the Packers and Jordan Love to get favorable ATS lines to start the \u201823 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minnesota Vikings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Minnesota was a below-average team ATS in 2022 (41%) and a bad away underdog (25%). The Vikings are poor ATS in conference games at 3-9-1 (23%) but very good in non-conference games at 4-1 or 80%. Survivor Tip: Look for Minnesota as an away favorite, when they cover ATS +5 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AFC North – The Away \u2018Dogs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The AFC North was 39-30-2 overall ATS in 2022 but 18-11-2 (58%) as an underdog. Cincinnati was a net winner across all ATS categories. Baltimore was bad at home but good as an underdog (67%). Cleveland was middling in all things, while Pittsburgh surprised with a win in every ATS category.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baltimore Ravens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Just 45% ATS overall and 1 of 8 at home, the Ravens nonetheless shone as an underdog, going 4-1-1 (67%) in that role even as their starting QB was injured. There is no home advantage for Baltimore — they were one of eight in the category in \u201822. Survivor Tip: Avoid Baltimore at all costs when at home and pick them as an away underdog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cincinnati Bengals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The class of the division in both record and ATS performance, the Bengals are a solid pick two out of three weeks under any conditions. Cincinnati was 73% ATS as an away team, which is great, 64% as a favorite, and 75% as an underdog.\u00a0 Survivor Tip: If you are looking for a gap, the Bengals struggle in their own division, so consider picking against them if the opponent is another AFC North team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleveland Browns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Browns were yawn-inducing in most things in 2022, going about .500 in most ATS categories. Cleveland was terrible at stringing together back-to-back wins, going just 1-6 the week after a W, but 6-3 ATS after a loss (67%). Weird but True: Cleveland was 0-3 with a rest advantage. Survivor Tip: The only place the Browns won in \u201822 was their own division; pick them there the week after a loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pittsburgh Steelers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Steelers relied on Defense to be a great team ATS in 2022. 10-6-1 ATS overall (59%), the Steelers were net winners away (67%), as a \u2018dog (55%), and as a favorite(67%). Pittsburgh is good after a win (5-2-1 or 63%), so you can string them together for a couple of weeks in your pool. Survivor Tip: The Steelers are excellent in non-conference games at 4-1 or 80%; pick them ATS when they play the NFC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
