Allisen Corpuz orchestrated one of Pebble Beach’s most memorable golf performances, capturing the U.S. Women’s Open, finishing three impressive strokes over Charley Hull and Jiyai Shin. Corpuz became the first American in two decades to capture the title; it is her first victory since joining the LGPA just over a year ago. She joins the list with fellow Punahou alum and Hawaiian native Michelle Wie West, who secured her last U.S. Women’s Open title in 2014. Corpuz’s performance symbolized a proverbial changing of the guard. Wie West participated in the tournament but did not finish with the best performance and plans to retire after a successful career on the green. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After coming up short in winning the Chevron Championship, Corpuz had everything to gain and nothing to lose entering the U.S. Women’s Open. Compared to Lydia Ko, who shot a quadruple bogey early, Rose Zhang, who couldn’t convert on her putter, and Nelly Korda, who didn’t drive very well, Corpuz didn’t make many mistakes. The only competition she faced was Nasa Hataoka, who relinquished her one-shot lead early after Corpuz birdied; she had six birdies on Sunday. Allisen Corpuz’s rise in golf was not an overnight success. The origin of her talent goes back to when she garnered enormous attention as the youngest qualifier in U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links history, surpassing Michelle Wie West. Corpuz would go on to win her first professional tournament at 16. While at the renowned Hawaii private school Punahou, she was a three-time All-American. Ultimately Corpuz took her talents to the University of Southern California, where she would lead the Trojans to three major championship wins between 2016-2021, leading the team with a 71.57 stroke average. As a rookie in the LGPA, Corpuz finished 41st in the rankings. Her earnings entering Sunday came in at $481,309. The UGSA had increased the U.S. Women’s purse to $11 million, equal to the men’s. Corpuz’s $2 million winnings at Pebble Beach Corpuz dramatically increased her earnings.
