In what will be the first of several similar declarations from now until September 7th, NFL football is very much BACK and the first slate of preseason games begin this Thursday. Seeing the training camp fields and fights in practice is the harbinger for what we know is coming &#8211; real-life football. While the stats don\u2019t count and the result doesn\u2019t mean a thing for the regular season, it\u2019s live-action which means there are lines to be digested. Without further ado, let\u2019s scrape at the bottom of the barrel and find some leans for week one\u2019s sixteen-game preseason slate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slate SparkNotes: Preseason Week One&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Thursday<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Houston Texans (-1.5) at New England Patriots, 7 p.m. &#8211; The Texans have a bit more to sort out a QB in game one between C.J. Stroud and Davis Mills, and on the Pats side the early word is Mac Jones should play at least a few series despite not playing in the 2022 preseason opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks (-2.5), 10 p.m. &#8211; It seems unlikely Kirk Cousins plays Thursday night, but chances are there for Geno Smith to take first team snaps in the first quarter. Pete Carroll seems to be a bit more aggressive in leaning starters into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Friday<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green Bay Packers (-2.5) at Cincinnati Bengals, 7 p.m. &#8211; The Pack now live in a post Aaron Rodgers world &#8211; will Jordan Love get reps to unofficially begin his reign? If he does I like the pack as Burrow and the Bengals starters should be sidelined all night. They know what they have there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pittsburgh Steelers (-1.5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7 p.m. &#8211; It was a year ago in this same spot where we all fell in love with Kenny Pickett off of preseason resp, then reality hit in-season. As for Tampa Bay, I like Baker Mayfield to go for gold here in week one to lock up his starting spot over Kyle Trask (yuck).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York Giants (-3) at Detroit Lions, 7 p.m. &#8211; The Lions begin their prep for the opening night slaughter they\u2019ll receive in Kansas City, while the Giants and Brian Daboll have shown the propensity to bench starters in this spot before. The line shows lots of respect to the Giants backups led by QB Tyrod Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atlanta Falcons (-2.5) at Miami Dolphins, 7 p.m. &#8211; The Falcons enter year two with Desomnd Ridder as their QB, and teammates say he\u2019s taking the reins of the offense. It will be interesting to see how the staff mixes his preseason reps, but early word is there won\u2019t be many so I like the Dolphins depth on defense here at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington Commanders at Cleveland Browns (-1), 7:30 p.m. &#8211; We\u2019ve already seen the Brows in action, so there\u2019s a tiny bit of context here. They fought surprisingly hard with their second and third units to win last week, so I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to see another strong effort from them, this time at home in Cleveland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Denver Broncos (-3.5) at Arizona Cardinals, 10 p.m. &#8211; The Broncos are one of the biggest favorites commanding a lot of action for a meaningless game, and it&#8217;s entirely due to the news that Russell WIlson and the starters will get a solid chunk of playing time in this and every preseason game. After a slow 2022 start Broncos country is looking to come out firing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Saturday<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tennessee Titans at Chicago Bears (-3.5), 1 p.m. &#8211; Mike Vrabel is notoriously careful in the preseason with his starters, and the Bears are still looking to fully develop Justin Fields\u2019 game. Fields and the starters are vaguely getting \u201csome\u201d playing time for the Saturday matinee, and it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess how long that ends up being. I would surmise about one quarter of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indianapolis Colts (-2.5) at Buffalo Bills, 1 p.m. &#8211; This could be that make or break moment that determines Anthony Richardson\u2019s rookie season trajectory, as he\u2019s sharing reps with Gardner Minshew. His highlight tape in camp is already the stuff of legends, now we watch to see if it translates against a legit Bills defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/articles.runyourpool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Colts_Football_23213604426905.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog-assets.runyourpool.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/07182920\/Colts_Football_23213604426905.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog-assets.runyourpool.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/07182920\/Colts_Football_23213604426905-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog-assets.runyourpool.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/07182920\/Colts_Football_23213604426905-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">AP Photo\/Michael Conroy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York Jets (-2.5) at Carolina Panthers, 4 p.m. &#8211; Let\u2019s get this out of the way &#8211; Aaron Rodgers won\u2019t play. He might see limited time in the preseason finale but it\u2019s unlikely, so it\u2019s a healthy dose of Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle against a good defensive Panthers unit. I expect Carolina to win the matchups at the line of scrimmage regardless of units in play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacksonville Jaguars (-3) at Dallas Cowboys, 5 p.m. &#8211; Trevor Lawrence and the starters will indeed take the field in the preseason opener in Dallas which will be nice to see, while the Cowboys are widely being precautious with Dak Prescott. In reality this will be three quarters of Cooper rush versus C.J. Beathard &#8211; breathtaking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philadelphia Eagles at Baltimore Ravens (-3.5), 7 p.m. &#8211; Despite his recent mega payday to stay a Raven, that doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean you get him in any preseason action. Past years have indicated he won&#8217;t lace it up Saturday night, but it never affects the Ravens. They\u2019re 23-0 in their last 23 exhibition games and 20-3 against the spread. The August lock you\u2019ve been looking for but never knew existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5) at Los Angeles Rams, 9 p.m. &#8211; Keeping it in the same stadium, it\u2019s a double home game to start the preseason in L.A. Sean McVay is keeping us guessing with what he calls a \u201cvery different\u201d preseason approach as opposed to sitting his starters throughout. I\u2019m intrigued enough to take the Rams against Chargers squad that never plays Justin Herbert in preseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sunday<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kansas City Chiefs at New Orleans Saints (-1.5), 1 p.m. &#8211; The defending world champs are back and on the road in the Big Easy. Their starters should be on full rest, while on the other Derek Carr will enthusiastically make his Saints debut and should play a good amount to get used to his new surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Francisco 49ers (-4) at Las Vegas Raiders, 4 p.m. &#8211; Week one preseason finished off with an intriguing west coast matchup in Vegas. The 49ers QB camp is a fascinating scenario with Brock Purdy sidelined, and Jimmy Garoppolo immediately faces his former team that swept him out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alex\u2019s Plays&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bucs +1.5 &#8211; A motivated Baker Mayfield playing for his starting job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dolphins +2.5 &#8211; Top to bottom a deeper roster that should win at home<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Browns -1 &#8211; The only team we\u2019ve got good film on with all units, they\u2019ll be more ready to play against their inferior opponent the Commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broncos -3.5 &#8211; Russell Wilson needs to show well early, even in August<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panthers +2.5 &#8211; More invested in defensive progress this week, and din;t see much from the Jets offense last week<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ravens &#8211; 3.5 &#8211; If there\u2019s such thing as a preseason NFL lock, this is it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rams +1.5 &#8211; Chargers won&#8217;t be playing starters and the Rams have a mystery plan.
