{"id":97620,"date":"2023-10-31T15:48:41","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T15:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/articles.runyourpool.com\/?p=97620"},"modified":"2023-10-31T15:48:46","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T15:48:46","slug":"this-week-in-pools-nfl-week-8-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.runyourpool.com\/articles\/2023\/10\/31\/this-week-in-pools-nfl-week-8-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"This Week in Pools: NFL Week 8 Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that one of the most highly picked teams in the RunYourPool contests this week was also one of the teams that had the highest edges based on how the betting markets moved late in the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bad news is that team was the Texans, who let Carolina grab their lone win of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s take a look at how everyone did in their pick\u2019ems in Week 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Week in Pick\u2019em Pools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top play across RYP pools was the Lions, who showed up in nearly 80 percent of players\u2019 picks this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, the Lions easily handled the Raiders to lock up a win for around four out of five entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from Detroit and Houston, two other teams were selected north of 75 percent of the time: Philadelphia and Kansas City.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Eagles at least rallied to barely cover. The Chiefs, though, didn\u2019t just let Taylor Swift down. They let most RYP players down, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here were the top five most-used teams last week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lions -7.5 (taken by 79.2 percent of players). Covered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texans -2.5 (76.9 percent). Lost outright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chiefs -7.5 (76.8 percent). Lost outright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eagles -6.5 (76.6 percent). Covered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ravens -8.5 (73.8 percent). Won but didn\u2019t cover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/b6cNvToJ_qml531HA76nft5EwrOE40xHrRVo7rjNgUMWx1y75d7-_Ph93C_Bkr9cT8U8p5-bZmUiycLygvIsc9T2ot4p_3XiXCYDBMXvpJ94d4K7LZwf_A2rV9dwk2p11agfvh_olat5Ohab6BbrB1M\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we look at the teams that had the biggest edges according to the Unabated <a href=\"https:\/\/unabated.com\/nfl\/pick-emref=zwfhzwj\">Pick\u2019em Edge Tool<\/a>, it\u2019s a rosier picture.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tool works by comparing contest lines to the Unabated Line. That line is a vig-free consensus line made from numbers at the sharpest market-making books. The exact weight of each book is determined by data scientists at Unabated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using a number that removes the \u201cjuice\u201d that sportsbooks normally charge, you should have a clearer idea of what the market thinks the true implied probability of each team winning that week. For example, the Unabated Line on the Jets game was -3 (-102). By converting that to a moneyline price of -147 and changing that to an implied probability, the market was saying the Jets had a 59.5 percent chance to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After watching that game, there should have been a way to suggest the Giants and Jets had a 80 percent chance of both somehow losing, but that\u2019s neither here nor there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what the top edges were according to the tool:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Seahawks -2.5 (64.4 percent). Covered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saints +1.5 (45.5 percent). Won outright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Texans -2.5 (76.9 percent). Lost outright.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jets -2.5 (69.1 percent). Covered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broncos +7.5 (23.2 percent). Won outright.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That ends up as a 4-1 week for the Pick\u2019em Edge Tool and a 2-3 week for the most popular plays at RunYourPool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through eight weeks, that brings the most-picked entries to a record of .500 at 20-20, while anyone who used the top 5 edges at Unbated would be 27-13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next Week in Survivor Pools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t worry survivor pool players. We haven\u2019t forgotten about you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/nyXlcw52NjvRWD5ipzkGDWa7D_p7gUBURzXtO7HoswBQiKtBXCbdKU6lBlqUPuxobNASIv0FHPJNK0-sC6DHKRgwS1VSx4fuKK9EXC54Gt7zn9jcLCfQIs3tOkl7uIiXPb0AoR3-e9ZBNYlKAjK97Vk\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week Unabated\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/unabated.com\/nfl\/survivor?utm_source=RYP&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=poolsref=zwfhzwj\">Survivor Optimizer<\/a>, suggested the Chargers over the Bears and that one made for a sweat-free night for anyone who ran with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(The Chargers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chargers\/status\/1718830956625191158\">social media troll job<\/a> on Monday tells you just how sweat-free it was.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week we can get away with a couple of teams you probably haven\u2019t used yet and may not be desperate to get in at all costs before the season ends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Saints are the top play (again, picking on the Bears) as the biggest moneyline favorite on the board at -293.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s also a chance to use the Steelers this week against Tennessee. They\u2019re only a -140 favorite at the time of this writing, but that number could be one to keep an eye on depending on how the market reacts to Will Levis\u2019 debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another play this week could be the Ravens against Seattle, but the tool prefers to save Baltimore for its Week 18 game against Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you do love the Ravens just after Halloween, you can always lock them down and the Optimizer will find you another choice for the final Sunday of the season.
