NCAAB Glossary Entry #157

Where Do We Get the Term March Madness?

March Madness, the nickname given to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, has been used since 1939 when it was originally coined by Henry Porter, an executive assistant secretary with the Illinois High School Association. Porter wrote “a little March madness may complement and contribute to sanity and help keep society on an even keel.”
