Trey Lance is an American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). He was born May 9, 2000, in Marshall, Minnesota. At 6 feet 4 inches tall and 224 pounds, Quarterback Trey Lance is a powerful presence on the field.

At a young age, he was trained mainly by his father, Carlton, a former cornerback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League and the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football.

    The Bisons

Before he struck gold with the NFL, he played college football at North Dakota State, where he led the Bisons to their NCAA Division I FCS national championship in 2019. While playing for the Bison nation, he also majored in strategic communication with a minor in business administration at North Dakota State.

At North Dakota State, Lance was a Walter Payton Award winner as the most outstanding offensive line player in the FCS and a Jerry Rice Award winner as the nation’s top freshman player. He is one of only three players in NCAA Division I history to win multiple national championships and individual awards, joining Tony Dorsett and Archie Griffin.

As a redshirt freshman in 2018, Lance impressed by throwing 287 times for 28 touchdowns and no interceptions, which is an NCAA record for most passing attempts in a season without an interception. He appeared in 19 games (17 starts) in his three years at North Dakota State and completed 208 of 318 passing attempts.

    The San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are the home team of the Bay Area and one of the most iconic teams in the NFL. They’ve won five Super Bowls, and their fans are some of the most passionate in the league. Most analysts predicted that the San Francisco 49ers would use their third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select either QB Trey Lance or Mac Jones. Not only that, the Niners traded 3 future picks in order to move up in the draft to select Lance.  Lance is the first QB they’ve taken in the first-round picks since Alex Smith in 2005. The 49ers signed Lance for $34.1 million, including a $22.2 million signing bonus.

The 49ers were impressed with what they saw from Lance last year, and they believe he has the potential to be their franchise QB for years to come. We’ll have to wait and see how he pans out at the professional level over the years, but there’s no doubt he has the talent and potential to be a great player in the NFL and under coach Kyle Shanahan.

Lance began the last season (2021) as the second-string quarterback behind incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo but made his NFL debut in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. He was utilized on one play during the first quarter, contributing to the eventual 41–33 victory by throwing a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield. The play was significant as it marked the first time Lance had stepped onto an NFL field in his young career. It was also a significant moment for the 49ers organization.

    Fantasy League Picks

So, you’re thinking about drafting Trey Lance, huh? The 2022 preseason has officially launched. The 49ers opened training camp in Santa Clara in mid-July. Training camp is always an exciting time for NFL fans. They finally get to see their favorite players back on the field, albeit in a limited capacity. However, one thing that is missing from these early practices is contact. It’s hard to gauge how players will perform when they’re not actually hitting each other.

As any football fan knows, the quarterback is the most important player on the field. They are responsible for leading the team to victory; their performance can make or break a season. So many fans are excited about Lance, who is currently drafted as the 13th-ranked quarterback in the National Fantasy Football Championship. Lance has only 2 NFL starts, but he has already shown tremendous potential. He is an explosive playmaker with the potential to gain 4,500 combined yards and a predicted chance of scoring up to 30 touchdowns. In other words, he has all the makings of a QB1. So if you’re looking for a quarterback with upside, Lance is your man to take you to the playoffs and beyond.

There’s an old saying in fantasy football ‘you don’t have to be a good football player to be a good fantasy football player. And that might hold true for Trey Lance, at least during what will be his first year as a full-time starter. At best, he was inconsistent with the minimal game action last season. That being said, there are two factors that have him rocketing up draft boards.

    • Potential – He has a great arm and is surrounded by amazing weapons at skill positions, including Deebo Samuel and George Kittle; there will be plenty of big play opportunities.
    • Rushing – QBs who run are immensely more valuable than a traditional pocket-passer. In his games where he played more than 15 snaps, he averaged more than 13 carries and 53 yards rushing; that’s a big boost to his fantasy floor.
