The NFL announced last Friday that it had suspended five players indefinitely for violating its sports gambling policy. The players included Detroit Lions’ former first-round pick wider receiver Jameson Williams and his fellow teammate’s wide receivers Quintez Cephus, Stanley Berryhill, Detroit safety C.J. Moore, and Washington Commander’s edge rusher Shaka Toney. The NFL  suspended Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill for six games for betting on college football, while Cephus, Moore, and Toney were disqualified for the entire season. Like other North American professional sports leagues, the NFL bans players from betting on league games. However, Williams and Berryhill’s case is unique because they placed bets at the Detroit Lions facility. They would not have been suspended if they placed their bets outside the facility.

This is not the first incident where a notable NFL player placed bets on games; the first was the current Jacksonville Jaguars Calvin Ridley, who, during his hiatus away from his former team, the Atlanta Falcons, took part in betting on Falcons games. Ridley received a one-year suspension for the 2022 season and has since been reinstated. Therefore, betting on sports has become a part of professional sports today. It is one of the most important sources of income for the leagues and teams involved; punishments for this should reflect this reality.

Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for the 2022 season for betting on NFL games in the 2021 season. The suspension announced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday, March 7, 2022, is for activity that took place while Ridley was away from the team while addressing mental health concerns.

    Piece of The Pie?

Sports betting undoubtedly is one of the biggest revenue drivers for the NFL. It was increased by 40% in the 2022 season alone across all teams. Since the reversal of the Professional and Amateur Protection Act, the NFL has doubled down on its partnerships and advertising with sportsbooks. In 2021, the NFL inked deals with notable sports books DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars Sportsbook totaling under a billion dollars. Nearly every team in the NFL has a sportsbook or fantasy partner. In addition,  fans can attend games and place physical bets at stadiums such as FedEx Field, where the Washington Commanders play, and at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals.

    The Integrity of The Game

One of the main reasons the NFL penalizes players harshly for betting on league games is that they would like to maintain the integrity of the game. The harsh penalties the league hands down will not discourage players from betting because it is legal. It is contradictory for the league to prevent its players from sports betting when advertisements are around the stadium. It is one thing for players to be involved in point-shaving or throwing games; however, if they participate in sports betting in good faith, just like any other fan, where does the league draw the line? Even though sports betting is a significant source of revenue for the NFL, the league must hold itself accountable for ensuring that the integrity of the game is maintained.
