The Golden Globes returned to the award season calendar this year, taking place last night from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California for its 80th edition. This show gives Academy Award pool players and bettors the chance to forecast possible winners for the Oscars.

It’s not exact, but many of the Golden Globes nominees and winners will also be part of the Academy Awards. Let’s take a look at last night’s Golden Globes winners and see what impact it might have on the 95th Academy Award show.

2023 Golden Globes Results – Best Picture

One of the Best Picture contenders for this year’s Oscars is ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ starring Colin Farrell and Brandon Gleeson. Farrell actually won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, but that wasn’t the only award Banshees won.

The big surprise was hearing that ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ beat out the very popular ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ for Best Picture for Musical or Comedy. Despite the upset victory, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ jumped ‘The Fabelmans’ across most sportsbooks for the Best Picture favorite.

‘The Fabelmans’ actually won Best Picture for a Drama, so it’s interesting to see ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ become the new Best Picture favorite after seeing two contenders take home hardware. Another huge surprise for Best Picture at the Golden Globes lay in the Best Foreign Language Film market, as ‘Argentina, 1985’ pulled off a massive upset win.

Suddenly, the Argentinian film became a serious Oscars threat for Best International Film after beating powerhouse ‘RRR’ and a very strong German film in ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’.

With India not submitting ‘RRR’ as its Best International Film contender, ‘Argentina, 1985’ won’t have to compete head-to-head with it as it did at the Golden Globes. This should increase Argentina’s chances of winning Best International Film, so highlight that market for your Oscars pools or wagers.

2023 Golden Globes Results – Best Actor, Actress

Despite ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ not winning Best Picture, actress Michelle Yeoh did win Best Actress for a Musical or Comedy for her role in it. Does that mean she will win the Best Actress Oscar?

Her value is worth looking at, but the safest play is still Cate Blanchett for her role in ‘Tár’. Blanchett did also win Best Actress for a Drama at the Golden Globes, so currently eye her ahead of Yeoh despite seeing expensive value (-140 with most sportsbooks).

Ana de Armas didn’t win a Golden Globe, but she was a nomination and also worth a look as a possible upset winner at the Academy Awards. Andrea Day won the last Golden Globe for Best Actress but didn’t win the Oscar. If that occurs this year, de Armas is the top underdog to consider beating out Blanchett and Yeoh.

Austin Butler for his portrayal of Elvis Pressley also won Best Actor for a Drama, a strong contender to consider for the Oscars. Brendan Fraser is the current favorite for that category but has seen his odds drop in recent weeks. If books are still offering up Butler at plus-value, now might be the time to strike.

2023 Golden Globes Results – Best Song

This is perhaps the most important result from the Golden Globes, and that’s ‘Naatu Naatu’ winning Best Original Song from the movie ‘RRR’. It wasn’t supposed to win, as both Rhinanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ and Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ saw higher odds to win entering last night’s event.

My own prediction has ‘Naatu Naatu’ as the best song this year, so with the Golden Globes upset victory, I consider it the top choice to take for Best Original Song at this year’s Oscars. The song is so popular that an entire IMAX theater of people started dancing when it played, a video that ended up going viral.
