The Pac-12 Conference’s future hangs in the balance after the Big 12 accepted an invitation from the University of Colorado to join the conference in 2024. The presence of Coach Deion Sanders undoubtedly influenced the move to the Big 12 by the University of Colorado. The Buffaloes have a brand new identity since the arrival of Coach Prime. Deemed the Prime Effect, the University of Colorado has sold out its season tickets and even sold out its spring game, which was the only spring game to be aired on ESPN.

Rumors are circulating that the University of Arizona will follow suit and look to join the Big 12. The writing has been on the wall for the Pac-12 for some time, given they have failed to land a lucrative media deal. The SEC, Big Ten, and ACC have cemented long-term media deals, and the SEC entered into a television deal worth roughly 3 billion dollars with ESPN. In addition, the Big Ten structured a seven-year contract worth about 7 billion dollars across NBC, Fox, and CBS. The ACC and the Big 12 have entered into long-term agreements with ESPN. In 2016, the ACC agreed to a media deal through 2035-2036, and the Big 12 received a six-year extension from ESPN worth approximately $2 billion. Despite trailing the SEC and Big Ten in revenue, the ACC has even gone as far as establishing a broadcasting deal with the CW Network to broadcast 50 games across football and basketball. A lot of the recent realignment in college sports resembles an arms race between conferences, and some believe that such a notion of the Power 5 Conference is merely a myth.

    When Did It Start?

Last year, the college sports world was rocked to its core when USC and UCLA announced they were leaving the Pac-12 to go to the Big Ten starting in 2024. The move made by these schools is projected to cost Pac 12 upwards of 200 million dollars in lost revenue. Given USC’s history and brand recognition in college football and UCLA’s in college basketball, they have been the critical cash cows of the conference, not to mention both schools are in the second-largest media market. With teams having to share collective conference revenue, it puts USC and UCLA in a bind where they have to question whether it’s worth sharing income with other member schools that cannot pull their weight.

    What Happens Next?

We are slowly moving towards more of a Power Four Conference structure in college sports. With the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC slowly pulling away from the Pac 12. There has been speculation that Apple TV will pick up the media rights to the Pac-12. However, one has to question whether or not that would be a valuable move by Apple, given the value of the remaining teams left in the conference after Colorado exits in 2024. We can expect there to be more conference shuffles to come. One team to keep an eye on is Notre Dame. Notre Dame will make a push to enter the Big Ten. The Big Ten conference is unique because not only did the conference secure a lucrative media rights deal across multiple significant networks, but it’s now the major Power 5 conference that expands coast to coast with the addition of USC and UCLA and most of its member schools have a presence in the midwest and east coast. These dynamic changes in college sports will continue to shape the landscape in the future.
